Portland bike counter: Nudging 1 million trips over the Hawthorne Bridge

Nothing stands out about last Sept. 25 in Portland. It was a Tuesday, 72 degrees, no rain.
Wait a minute. No rain?
There it is: perfect conditions for riding a bike. And so it was that the date holds the record for the most bike trips across the Hawthorne Bridge on a weekday -- 8,305 -- since the city's $20,000 bike counter went up last summer.

A new bike counter on the north end of the Fremont Bridge will help the city gather better data about bike traffic along one of the city's most popular routes for two-wheeled commuters, officials say.
The seven-foot totem with electronic counter was unveiled Thursday by the Seattle Department of Transportation and the Cascade Bicycle Club.

Wednesday, September 12, 2012 , LONG BEACH, Calif. —The Association of Pedestrian and Bicycle Professionals (APBP) has announced the winners of its annual awards program to honor excellence in the profession of bicycle and pedestrian transportation. The awards were presented at APBP's annual meeting on September 12th, held during the ProWalk/ProBike® Conference in Long Beach. Jean-Francois Rheault of Montreal received the Professional of the Year – Private Sector award. The Professional of the Year Awards recognize the achievements of pedestrian and bicycle professionals made during the 12-month period between the summer of 2011 and the spring of 2012.

Jean-Francois Rheault, the North American Director of Eco-Counter, has worked with the City of Vancouver, B.C., to install counters that are working to justify new pedestrian and bicycling infrastructure in the city. He has worked to bring the first public bicycle counter with display (Eco-TOTEM) to the Hawthorne Bridge in Portland, OR becoming the first of a kind in North America.
Jean-François is very honored by this award, and wants to thank our clients, partners and the whole Eco-Counter team for its support, dedication and passion to deliver the best solutions to monitor active transportation.
