It can be difficult to have a holistic picture of bike usage along a 3,000-mile bike trail network. However, the province of Québec in partnership with Vélo Québec, has succeeded with the world famous Route Verte (Green Route). Attendance peaks and long-term trends have been measured at multiple locations along the extensive trail network with the help of 18 automatic counting systems. The accuracy and reliability of the data from these counters has made it possible to compare usage along multiple sections of the network. The authorities have used this information to better manage maintenance schedules and upgrades to the network.

With 6,000km of bike trails running through 9 different countries, it comes without no doubt that calculating the benefits of the Atlantic-Black Sea Bike Trail is a key point of the project. With 25 counters installed with GSM data transmission and a report produced every year, it is easy to inform all the concerned parties (hotels, tourist offices, local administrations, etc.) and compare data from different countries. 2 regions are now sharing their data at the moment, and they are builiding economic indicators based on this gathered data.

The results and conclusions derived from reliable count data are extremely valuable in garnering public support for a project. An example of this can be found in the Danube Bike Path – an exceptional, 150km bike route that passes through four states in Austria. The state governments used data from 17 counters and tourist surveys to determine attendance figures and other key metrics on the use and economic benefit of the Danube Bike Path. Policy makers received broad public support for improvements to the path after communicating these powerful attendance figures to the public.
