    ACTIVE TRANSPORTATION

    ACTIVE TRANSPORTATION

Counting pedestrians and cyclists is crucial to understanding current numbers and predicting future demand. As numbers of commuters travelling on foot or by bike increase, it becomes essential to incorporate these active modes into transportation planning. Many local authorities are implementing policies that encourage active transportation; count data helps inform decision-making. Collecting reliable bike counter and pedestrian counter data is important to help justify investments, predict future demand and plan for future pedestrian and cycling infrastructure.

From short-term TUBE counters to large, visible count Displays, Eco-Counter has developed a range of automatic counters that are reliable, discreet, robust and battery-powered. These systems are designed exclusively for counting pedestrians and cyclists in the city. The Eco-Counter data can be used to measure the success of an active transportation policy and our easy-to-use Eco-Visio software enables the communication of those results to the public.

    Justifying a controversial pilot project

The City of Vancouver spearheaded a controversial pilot project in 2009 which involved removing a vehicle lane on the Burrard Bridge and replacing it with a bike lane. Using Eco-Counter's ZELT system, the City was able to collect reliable cyclist counts both before and during the year-long trial period.

The data demonstrated the success of a road conversion on one of Vancouver's most important arterials. Since the addition of the bike lane in the pilot project, the City saw a 24% increase in bike trips, year-on-year, while the vehicular traffic volume remained constant. The City was able to use this data to communicate the results of the lane conversion to the public.

    Increase Safety

    • Study dangerous crossings for pedestrians and cyclists.
    • Measure pedestrian and cyclist exposure and injury risk.
    • Use detection to indicate cyclists crossings to car drivers.

    Secure dangerous crossings for cyclists

Tamaki Drive Crossing in Auckland - a well-known dangerous crossing - was the site of several serious accidents involving cyclists. By automatically detecting the presence of a cyclist at a crossing, the Eco-Signal warns vehicles to slow down their driving. Since its installation two years ago, there have been no further incidents recorded.

    Plan

    • Establish before and after counts to help justify recent investments in infrastructure or pilot projects.
    • Use bike counters and pedestrian traffic counters to understand usage patterns of cyclists and pedestrians as a function of time, infrastucture type, weather, and season.
    • Evaluate trends over time to help plan future investments in infrastructure.

    Nantes / France

Managing multiple counters to plan and analyse active transportation

The city of Nantes has a large pedestrian and bicycle network, unique in its diversity. To plan and manage this vast network, about twenty bicycle counting points have been installed between 2010 and 2011, plus 15 pedestrian systems for Downtown Management and 15 pedestrian systems in the local parks and gardens.
The data collected is of great help to analyse and present dynamism of active transportation in the city.

Measure the impact of new cycling infrastructures

With the aim of assessing investment program, the City of Vancouver has set up an extensive monitoring program to measure the impact of new cycling infrastructures on active transportation. To judge if those new infrastructures had positive impact on cycling and walking, a mixed counting system combining PYRO-Boxes, ZELT and TUBES was set up.
